1) DISCUSSION POST
Background & Tips on this Discussion
------------------------
Please respond to one (1)of the following TOPIC CHOICES, using sources under the Explore headingas the basis of your response:
- TOPIC CHOICE ONE: Listen to one (1) composition (i.e., for a
symphony) by Beethoven, a transitional figure between classical and
romantic music. Identify the composition that you listened to, and
determine whether you would characterize the chosen composition as
either the Classical or Romantic style of music. Explain the key
features that lead you to your conclusion. Identify one (1) modern
musician who you believe was great at one type of music yet
pioneered another.
- TOPIC CHOICE TWO: Select one (1) example of a literary work or a work of visual art from the 1800s—either Romantic or Realist in style—that responds in some way to the Industrial Revolution. Identify the work and the artist or writer, describe its features and style, and explain the manner in which it responds to the Industrial Revolution. Identify one (1) specific literary or artistic work of our day that effectively protests a social injustice.
- [ voluntaryaddition: Whichever topic you choose, this is an additional issue--you may or may not care to comment on this--and that is ok: The Industrial Revolution of the 1800s (chaps. 28 and following) led to unemployment and poverty for many who were accustomed to an older form of work, while also creating new levels of productivity, cheaper goods for many, and new work opportunities. We are experiencing a similar transition as the age of Information develops--and robotics and AI are just around the corner. SO--A COMMENT if you wish on our transition to new forms of work: Should taxi drivers protest Uber or should truck drivers protest driverless “smart trucks” putting them out of work. Explain your thinking.]

2) PEER REVIEW
Hello class,
I chose option one for my discussion, I listened to Beethoven's piano and orchestra, Concerto No.2 entitled Allegro Con brio. I thought the piece to be more of a classical sound and rhythm to it, with rapid highs and lows of violins and short burst with a quieted ending that brought surprise and an unsuspecting tempo to the listening of it. I'm sorry but I can't seem to think of a musician that was great at one type of music but pioneered another(at this time anyway).
3) PEER REVIEW
Hello,
Everyone,
Topic Choice one:
Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 ("Eroica"), 2nd Movement
When I listen to the music, it sounds like it could be classical to me, but then I started overthinking the piece. The music sounds traditional to me because of all the different instruments. So after researching what the music was about, I found out that the music was about romance. Romance would not have been my first choice.
James Brown was a great musical pioneer who was the inventor of funk, the grandfather of hip-hop. James Brown influence artists ranging from Mick Jagger to Michael Jackson to Afrika Bambaataa to Jay-Z.
