Interpersonal class relationships have taught me a lot that I would have not learnt anywhere else. It has brought me to a better understanding of myself and others around me. I have now the necessary skills that I need to build and maintain friendships and interactions. Learning to communicate and listen to people has contributed a lot to a better indulgence of the society around me. Interpersonal skills are so essential in developing other key life skills such as problem solving and decision making. The skills also enable us to overcome communication barriers that have resulted in many misunderstandings.

This class has been helpful to me in regaining my self-value. I learnt that the aspect valuing myself, even though it is influenced by external factors such as family, religion, community and personal experience, my own purpose and vision were the great determiners of how I valued myself. The core values I held on were contributed a lot to by own system of beliefs and attitudes. These factors really affected the way I responded to certain situation and my overall self-worth. After learning this I changed the way I value myself by setting new goals and principles. I have developed and new vision for my life and am working towards achieving my goals. I have come to realize that everyone is unique in his or her own way and we all have a goal to accomplish (Bonow & Follette, 2009).

In this chapter about understanding yourself throughout the lifespan, I have learnt different concepts and theories concerning different views of life. The most important realization is that my values and belief system is shaped by both my genetics and society. These two aspects have contributed greatly to who I am today. The eight stages of psychology development as outlined by Erik Erikson have enlightened me on how people develop psychologically and I tend to consider this as critical in understanding other people around me and to understand how the society shapes my growth in terms of psychology. Different people have different personalities and understanding them from this perspective is critical in developing essential relationships

I have learnt that value clarification is an essential element in increasing self-awareness. This technique has provided me with an opportunity to reflect on my own dilemma and given a chance to analyze and clarify the thing I strongly believe in.  Value clarification has enabled me prioritize what is most important among the beliefs I have held on to for a long time. I have made a new list of priorities that will enable me achieve my goals and objectives. To this I have adapted behavioral congruence whereby I live by my set principle with very limited external influence. I now know my limits and set goals depending on my abilities. This way I am able to do all that I say and believe in. The basic values I intent to pass to my children are honesty with one’s self, justice to self and others and self-worth. These deemed to me as essential to living peaceful life (Suggett, Radtke & Paul, 2017). As I progress in life my values change with the new challenges I meet. Challenges make me to always adjust hence also my values.

I have learnt that emotional experience is what drive what we do at all times. Not all our emotions are predetermined by old experiences but by the current encounters also play a vital role in our emotional expressions. Emotional intelligence refers to the idea of several intelligence that range from interpersonal intelligence and intrapersonal intelligence.  Emotional intelligence is simply the art of understanding myself and others. According to Goleman’s (1996) model it is the competencies and skills that drive leadership performance. And hence if have to achieve my personal objectives and career goals, I need to always control my emotions. Emotional intelligence encompasses aspects such as self-awareness, Self-regulation, empathy and motivation which in great way determine my personal growth and success. My personal emotional development was influenced greatly by close relatives and friends. Over time the kind of experiences I had with them shaped my emotions and feelings. Cultural beliefs and values play also an important role in shaping one’s emotions and overall development. To an extend I am a product of stereotypic gender roles in emotional development. The society defined who I am in regards to gender, what I am supposed to do and what not to do. And this finally determined how I expressed myself emotionally.

Becoming a better listener is an essential part in our lives. Among the key strategies to being a good listener are keeping an eye-contact, learning to summarize what is said and asking questions where clarity is needed. The most important thing to keep in mind is that we do not listen to respond rather to understand. Because listening is part of communication, I tend to incorporate this skill in my relations, career and entire life through ensuring that I pay close attention and take time to process information correctly. Before I took the class, my communication styles were mainly manipulative and submissive where I said yes to everyone I feared or regarded highly. I have learned to adopt assertive communication skills that helps me respect myself and others when communicating. It is because through the class I have developed high self-esteem for myself and the other party. On the other hand, Empathetic listening is the art of paying attention to another person with empathy. It is essential to seek to understand before being understood.  After understanding what empathetic listening is I now pay more attention to what people are saying to me rather than being in hurry to answer back and give my opinion.

This class has been very helpful as I have learnt various strategies to use to improve my communication skills. Nonverbal communications mainly entail various aspects of body language such as gestures, facials expressions, eye contact and posture. Even though much of the non- verbal communication is unintentional it passes along important messages to the listener. Verbal communication should be eloquent and direct to the point. In electronic communication it is essential that you always check your messages before sending them, picking up call rather than ignoring the callers and the messages should be brief and specific. I have been mostly employing the closed communication style in my life and getting little information than I actually needed.  I tend to improve this and move to a level of full disclosure and increasing the content I share so as to receive appropriate feedback. I want to be a good communicator by first being a good listener. It’s important to give compliment where it’s due and criticize politely.  I appreciate both compliments and criticism positively because they are all part of growth.

As humans we are naturally social and it’s important that we learn and build positive relationships. Friendships and interaction are part of what we crave for on a daily basis. Some of the strategies that I learned to use in building positive relationships is trust. Trust is developed when one is honest with their words.  Secondly is having mutual respect for one another and this is mainly through considering the esteem and self-worth of a person.  Initiating interactions and conversations is the hardest part of socializing in individuals. Being open-minded where you think beyond your own beliefs and values. Tolerating one another, accepting that others are different and appreciating others without prejudice and discrimination are essential elements to help one foster positive relationship.

Intimate relationships are part of our daily lives and it’s an important that we strive to build and maintain them. I have learnt different strategies that will help me both now and, in the future, develop and maintain an intimate relationship. One key strategy is paying attention to one another. Learning to respond with empathy and creating time for one another. In the past my relationship failed due to lack of proper communication. This led to misunderstandings amongst ourselves that later own led to breaking of the relationship.  The knowledge and insight I learnt regarding proper communication in a relationship will be of great help to me as I intent to build more positive relationships. As a future parent I intend to build my family on the foundation of trust and honesty. Loving each member and taking care of their needs and feeling will be my priority.

In conclusion taking this class was the most important decision I made. I have grown in all spheres of my life and that encompasses social growth, emotional growth and in my relationships and communication with others. This first has been brought about by the ability to understand and value myself. Having a new perspective of who I am has been critical in helping me develop a positive attitude towards self and respect for others. The good communications skills have helped me improve communication and hence easy to build and maintain relationships both now in and in the future. Happiness is an emotional experience that is expressed in many ways such as joy, interest and pride. True happiness is found in one fulfilling his or her ambitions and needs. I now understand that in order to be happy I have to work hard to fulfill my dreams and objectives at all times.
